Co-taught Math with Miss Pellin

Hi Math Families!

As we have begun our math classes over these last past weeks, I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself to the families that might not know me yet and explain my role in Miss Pellin's math class for this school year.  I am the learning specialist in 3rd grade at Prairieview, so I get the privilege of rotating from classroom to classroom and co-teaching with our very talented faculty.  This school year I am team teaching with Miss Pellin in math.

Let me start out by saying that all five 3rd grade classrooms are teaching the Common Core 3rd grade Mathematics Standards using the Envision Math framework.  That being said, I am quite an asset as you can imagine.  Envision math is centered around differentiation which is best practice in education.  Differentiation can be quite tricky for one teacher to carry out alone, though our staff is excellent!  The benefit of having a teacher like myself co-teaching is that there is a smaller teacher:student ratio, more chances for hands-on learning/enrichment/intervention, and another perspective in how to best instruct.

Miss Pellin and I plan together and are equals in the classroom.  We both are certified teachers and well qualified to instruct the whole group lesson as well as our rotating small group instruction within our math model.  It is actually quite exciting.  If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding your student in math, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We are a team and make all of our decisions together.  We are having an amazing year so far working with your students.  This math curriculum is rigorous, but as the students learn the routines and what to expect - they will be able to really delve in deeply to the content and work on mastery of the 3rd grade math concepts.  Thank you for continuing to work on your student's math fluency at home (see the "Xtramath" newsletter coming home) and supporting your student in math!
