Homework

The dreaded word... :)

This week I wanted to talk a little about homework and some tips and tricks surrounding it.  The purpose of homework is to continue working with concepts presented in school for maximum retention.  Some students this year seem to view it with a high level of anxiety and frustration.  Of course (like many adults) students would prefer not to do "work" versus doing it.  3rd graders as far as the student body of Prairieview goes, do not get assigned much homework on a daily basis.  Many students are asked to read 20 mins a night which is best practice anyway and may have some spelling or math work as well.  To make room for hands on activities and other fun supplements to the curriculum, studying for assessments should be happening at home as well.  We do work with the skills and material a lot at school but reinforcement from home is helpful.  Please share with your student the importance of homework as we do and help them think of it as fun.  Let them be the teacher at home and "teach" you what they learned in school.  Make a special homework "nook" for working, etc.  For many students, just the word 'homework' causes panic.  Really in some form, we all have homework we need to accomplish that we may prefer not to do.  This is a life skill and it is really important.  We are consistent here at school and do hold the students to our expectations.  That being said, we try very hard (especially in my math class) to complete work in school where we can.  The students can still bring home their workbook to show you what they did though! :)  They are encouraged to do this.  Additionally, classwork that is not completed in school (for refusal reasons only) will become homework in addition to whatever is assigned.

Thanks for your continued support!
