What's in the Forsman Future?

Spelling
We will be working with List # 6 next week.  Please continue to ask your student about the phonics rules in the spelling list and work on "tapping out" words to decode them.

Reading
We will be starting to incorporate "daily 5" into our reading core instruction.  This includes chances for the student to: read to themselves, read to others, listen to reading, write in response to reading, and there will be opportunities to work with words and join guided reading groups.  We are very excited about this style of learning and hope to see the students continue this model at home within and in addition to their 20 minutes of reading each night.  The more chances they get to work with reading strategies and read - the more of a 21st century learner they will become.  There is a big push within the Common Core standards coming next school year for problem solving and critical thinking skills even in literacy instruction.  We are helping to prep the students for this shift and increase in rigor!

Math
We are starting week 2 of Chapter 2 on Monday.  Miss Millbrandt and I will be doing more flexible grouping and both reteaching and enrichment based on the students' needs.  We are planning to test Chapter 2 on Friday.  That is our summative assessment but along the way in the chapter we do assess more informally and always do review ahead of time.  We like to think of math instruction as a revolving door.  We will continuously be revisiting past concepts and building on these.  Just because a chapter is over doesn't mean the students will not see these concepts anymore.  :)  We will also be focusing on problem solving as it related to the concepts from Chapter 2.  We will scaffold the learning as we model the steps it takes to come to their conclusion.
Tune in next Friday for more Forsman Fun!
