Transitions

'Tis the season to talk about great ways to help your student transition to and from long breaks away from school.  It can be difficult for students to hide their joyful anticipation of an upcoming vacation from school.  We certainly understand such excitement and weave in some fun activities and energy breaks around this time of year.  However, it is important for students to know that we are still engaged in much learning and though we try to keep our routines and schedule as much like typical days as possible, things may look a little different.  Even so, students are held to the same expectations as all other days in school.  In the weeks leading up to a break we will still have classwork, homework, and subjects to study.  Please help discuss this with your student if possible at home.  On the flip side, returning back from a longer break can be a difficult transition as well.  The students are used to having a more home-centered routine, perhaps with less structure than is expected at school.  Taking a couple days before the big return to remind the student of what will be expected at Prairieview when they get back is a great idea.  Reminding them that learning is to take place, classwork (especially writing) will be given to them, homework/studying, etc.  Coming back from winter break especially may be a bit difficult because we have testing right away (see next week's blog) and it is several months before their next break.  Thanks (as always) for continuing to support your student here at Prairieview.  Together we can really help students succeed!
