What's in the Forsman Future?

Spelling
We will be working with List # 5 next week.  I have been going into Miss Pellin and Miss Stetka's rooms weekly to do a phonics lesson.  The lesson relates to the first 15 words on the list of the week.  The last 5 are always high frequency words.  The rule of the week is great to study to have the students key in on that idea come test time on Friday.  They should also continue to "tap out" their words- breaking the words down into familiar sounds.  Thanks for practicing with your student at home!

Reading
When reading with your student at home, try to have them use a "strategy" from school.  They can tell you one they are going to use and show you how they use it.  The strategies we have discussed are: predicting, visualizing, summarizing, questioning, connecting, inferencing, monitoring/clarifying, decoding (phonics), and evaluating.  It is best practice to continually use these strategies to aid comprehension.

Math
We will start chapter 2 on Monday.  This next chapter covers comparing and ordering numbers.  There is also a big push state-wide for problem solving and higher level thinking.  Please continue to turn everyday problems into chances for your student to solve them.  Get them to orally work through math problems and explain WHY they are taking the steps they are taking.  This will come in handy BIG time later in the year!

RTI services in 3rd grade have started!  We have tier 2 math/reading (30 min.) as well as tier 3 math/reading (60 min.) offered daily.  If a letter went home for math (and/or) reading, this affects your student.  Ask them about their reading or math group and what they are learning.  We use scientifically research based interventions to help your student bridge the gap they may have with a certain skill set.  For any specific question you can ask your student's homeroom/math teacher or myself!

Tune in next Friday for more Forsman Fun!
